On June 7, 2014, Pearson played against Diego Sanchez. Despite outstriking Sanchez in every round, he was defeated by Sanchez via a split decision, which he felt was unjust.

Pearson then took his case to the New Mexico Athletic Commission, “hoping that the verdict will be overturned, if not to a no-contest.” The formal ruling, however, remained the same.
